About three weeks after I returned, I quit my job; I needed a change. I even started fixing my hair differently, with fewer ponytails and more braids. Still, I couldn’t get into the whole makeup thing—just a touch of blush and a splash of color on the lips and eyes.

I was hired as an office clerk at a children’s advocacy center, filing paperwork, and was free from taking phone calls. The center was in a bigger town than my last job and not that far from my home, and there were tastier places to go out and eat lunch, much more than a pizza joint and a café.

I made new friends at the job quickly, and we ate Mexican one day, pizza the next, Chinese the next. It was a delightful change from that small town but what I missed most was seeing Milly. I didn’t even know her well, and she probably will never know it, but she was an inspiration for me. She was working, going to school, and being the best mother she could be, as well as working close to Frank Brennen, all with a smile on her face. All I did before was answer phones for car dealerships and head home to a wonderful fiancé who had dinner waiting for me, and I was burnt out. I don’t know how the girl did it.

Except for not seeing Milly, and Daniel, of course, everything in my life was improving. Working with a few women with good senses of humor as well as a worthy cause (helping children in troubled homes) was much more enjoyable than fighting with dealership owners about how inadequate they think I am over their own inability to work a program on a computer. However, my evenings were lonely.

The cats always liked Daniel better, so he took care of them, but I still had Hazel Brown to look after. I hung out once in a while with the girls from work, but my weekends were spent puttering around the house, not doing much of anything other than cleaning up rabbit droppings and reading books. I had trouble watching Forensic Files and Dateline without Daniel nearby.

I got a call from one of my older friends, Marcy, one day. We made plans to meet up at Top-Off Buffet for lunch. She thought it sounded like a strip club, but it was only the best Chinese buffet in town. She looked better than ever when I saw her. At first, I assumed married life was treating her well; she was looking thinner.

“I’m getting divorced,” she said casually as she stuffed a fried potato covered in General Tso’s sauce in her mouth like she hadn’t eaten in days. “So, I heard you and Daniel broke up.”

“Yeah,” I said with a somber tone, and I meant it. I still missed him. “You’re getting divorced? I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Don’t be. I’m not. That was seven months of hell. I should’ve never married that scumbag.”

She didn’t look like it was bothering her.
